Thanks for the very complete answer, Stephan. I’d come to the same conclusion myself, and have just begun exploring the road of a bespoke ViewHelper for that part of the menu. (Using my own alternative to v:page.menu.sub when the appropriate checkbox is set in the {item}. If I’m successful, I’ll write and link to a blog entry giving details.
