I worked around this with my own FileReferenceService in 6.0 I added a fe user uploaded file like described in the wiki and added the file_reference with a db query. To be honest the API is a totally mess in my opinion (I know it's experimental) but there should be a pi for CRUD for BE User and FE User soon
