If you have an empty path segment, than it is needed. If you unset it, 
RealURL will not be able to decode the URL. You can only split your 
postVarSets to more sets.

No and it will never be possible. It is a technical limitation related to 
decoding and current architecture. This may change in RealURL 2.0.
