Go ahead and make a patch. Since the rewrite, this should not be over-
complicated to archive.
Basically you would need a selector for the TER and some clever way to 
handle conflicts.

Anyway, it will not be in 6.0, but I would support you with reviews if you 
try anything it that direction.


But as a long term vision (or maybe as a 6.1/6.2 project), I would prefer if 
the extension manager would support composer based extensions.
That might be better task than to create code that might just last for one 
version ;)
