To my understanding, that part is heavily SOAP driven:
http://typo3.org/wsdl/tx_ter_wsdl.php

That should make it a lot easier to implement alternatives.
If the proxy class in TYPO3 is of no use, run it through
http://www.urdalen.no/wsdl2php/index.php :)
