[TYPO3-dev] Typo3 and persistent connexions

Hello,

Do you guys know if Typo3 basically maintains persistent connexions to the
database ? 
Or do permanent connexions occur only if Typo3 is expressively told to do so
?

Our server administrator reports he always has 5 open mysql connexions on
the Typo3 database right after restarting mysql, (and often 50 open
connexions with 2 typo3 websites hosted (one of these making 800 visits per
day). 
It seems ok to me, but the sys administrator beleives it is very abnormal
and he is alerting me. What do you guys think of this ?
