[TYPO3-dev] How can ordinary be users read fields from the be_users table

Dear folks,

in  an ext I have a field of type group where you can add a list of 
be_users. Unfortunately this only works for admins, for ordinary 
be_users the select list remains empty because (I suppose) only admins 
have read access to the root page. Can you help me please?
