Thanks for bringing this back to life.

Unfortunately it's not a no-brainer (see my comments in Gerrit). I think 
it would be a good thing to read the old discussion, make a patch for 
all supported versions which include extbase and put a summary of the 
old discussion in a comment in Gerrit. That will probably speed things 
up a bit :-)
