Solution is: set textMaxLength to a value > 100 since this value is the 
hardcoded fallback in class.tslib_gifbuilder.php

This is really annoying because most database fields wich are commonly 
used for rendering (tt_content.header, pages.title, pages.subtitle are 
varchar(255) by default) - i guess i'll add a feature request to the 
bugtracker.
