How would they know about lists.typo3.org in the first place?
Although we are in the know, that doesn't automatically mean that 
everybody else is, too especially people new to the project.

Pleas always remember that people might not know all the things you, we 
and, I know already. Also there are cultural differences where responses 
may be taken differently.
With GSoC we're getting a lot of attention from all around the world and 
countries where TYPO3 is not known yet. It would be a pitty if we scare 
those new people away just by assuming or implying that new people are 
as knowledgeable as we are. Remember, you started out with no knowledge 
about TYPO3 too, same as anybody here too.


Everybody of us should always remember these things when writing on 
public mailinglists. You never know who is reading them...
