I can second that. As I started with PHP and programming for TYPO3 in 
late 2006 I had no clue about FLOW3. I learned a lot of API and did some 
classical extensions. But the real push towards a better insight in 
programming came with FLOW3. Many people I have talked to since then 
made the same experience.

We should not underestimate the benefit from this drainage of knowledge 
into the community happening since the team started to work on TYPO3 v5.
