As its name implies, the crawler is just a tool to crawl the page tree. 
Different modules can register themselves with the crawler to do 
something with each page crawled. Indexed search is just one of them. 
The cache manager (cachemgm) (re)generates the page cache, Static 
publishing (staticpub) creates HTML versions of the pages.
