Lets say that some feature costs 5000€ to implement. That might be a too 
heavy cost for the customer. That doesn't mean that it isn't a valuable 
feature and a needed feature.So the TYPO3 company now has to decide if 
it itself should invest time/money in the project. But I still haven't 
seen any company who has made THE gallery extension (for example). That 
doesn't mean that the need isn't there - it just means that noone is 
coordinating efforts/money.
If that feature only had to cost 500€ for the customer, then it had been 
developed. And I think that could be achieved through the use of donations.
