My strong opinion is that we need at least two developers working full time on v4 and those developers should not be experiementers, they should implement major planned features.

If features start to appear fast due to their permanent work, the money might start to appear. Another solution would be to have an advanced version of TYPO3 (like Magento has). Yet another solution is to provide consultations and services to agencies through the T3A (tt_news, realurl, irre, core services, etc). Agency asks T3A for the expert and pays to T3A for the work. T3A pays to the developer.
TYPO3 could offer a better page and list module as extensions if you buy
a licence fee. Money could also be collected by this way.
How should companies want to sponsor money to TYPO3, if their patches
won't make it into the Core? They are forced to put everything into
their own extensions. There is at the moment no pratical way to
contribute code to the community. And if the sponsor TYPO3, then all
money is invested into version 5.x only.
It would already help a lot to have a simple PHP programmer paid who
just tests and commits the patches which have already 2 '+1's. It should
not be necessary to have a core developer for this job. An automatic
test would be fine.

I have already created extensions with an improved page, list module and
TCE (the code has mostly just been copied from TYPO3 4.3), because I see
no chance in getting enough response in the future from the Core list
and others cannot wait for TYPO3 4.3, they want to use it already now
under TYPO3 4.2. I am trying to sell the next more improved versions of
these extensions. It will be available in TER after about 3 years. Maybe
this is a way to get sponsorship for the current work being done. If you
want to join, then you are welcome.
I have already succeeded in collecting money for sponsoring the
development of some paymentlib extensions. Now most of them are freely
available in TER.
