Right! But removing it from Core would quickly make it unusable at all 
and having support (even if not as "perfect" as with MySQL) of other 
DBMS such as Oracle or MS SQL (just to mention 2 of them) is a *must* 
for many enterprises. This is a big advantage of TYPO3 over other CMS.

The new inclusion model of DBAL with svn:externals will move it a bit 
away from Core itself while keeping it as part of it, meaning 
development will be easier. Although I must admit I still have no news 
about a real change of its handling from my point of view even if it was 
agreed that I should become in charge of it...
