I'm sorry I got to correct you (and everyone still believing) in this, too:
Not the OS projects themselves got that funding, which is very 
important! There's a startup company that got venture capital to build 
profitable services around the OS project - things like hosting, support 
service, special features and so on. Of course some of that money also 
goes to sponsoring of events and thus going back to the actual project 
again.
However, please do not confuse these things, it's not the project that 
got the money, but a company to generate even more money out of it to 
make their investors happy. I think a lot of people miss that point and 
only see those huge numbers.

So everyone, please be a bit more relaxed when it comes to millions of 
dollars other projects are _said_ to have - they simply don't.
