IMO ... guess so...
It was once discussed to but a little paypal icon next to the extensions  
in EXT Manager. Through it does not help the core it would help getter  
better extensions...

also it might be worse considering to put a paypal icon somewhere in About  
Modules as this the start page of the backing and has already a big note  
... having a donate link would properly make people donate who might never  
ever thought about it... something like donate a peanut :p

Another option would be to rethink the way of premium membership (T3A).  
Maybe an self made add banner could be placed somewhere around typo3.org,  
showing the gold sponsors in random order...

what is the difference about TYPO3 fund raising and Joomla! / Drupal fund  
raising ? !!!
