Actually strange, but after a "little" (in effect the whole
afternoon :-( ) investigation & testing i've realized that:

- My home/office pc where the environement is:
OS: Ubuntu 9.04
Php: 5.2.6 with magic_quotes_gpc = off (<----- important, see below...)
Mysql: 5.0.75

Result: everything is ok. Fresh installations of TYPO3 4.2.10 or
upgrades from earlier 4.2 version to 4.2.10 are working well.

- On some of production servers:
OS: Centos 5.x
Php: 5.1.x with magic_quotes_gpc = off
Mysql: 5.0.x or 4.x

a) TYPO3 4.2.9 worked well till yesterday. Upgrading to 4.2.10 or fresh
install: problems described above
b) TYPO3 4.1.13 works well

Switching magic_quotes_gpc = on

a) TYPO3 4.2.10 works well as expected
b) TYPO3 4.1.13 still continue working well

So, there's something wrong with this mix:

Php 5.1.x with magic_quotes_gpc = off and TYPO3 4.2.10

Loek perhaps can you confirm that ?
