Another possibility could be to drop the use of "bigDoc" (and "smallDoc" 
and "mediumDoc" and "noDoc") and replace them simply with "template", 
which has no width restriction. I don't know what could be the side 
effects of such a change, but at least that's what I do in the BE 
modules that I develop.

These extra template classes could be deprecated then.

But that's probably beyond the scope of your original question.
