This piece of code should work, its running on  
http://www.typo3wizard.com/en/snippets/common-problems-and-solutions/different-header-formatting-for-each-column/sample-different-header-formatting-for-each-column.html  
(typo3 4.2) and i also tested it right now in a typo3 4.1.9 instalation  
where it worked to.

Maybe you altered the typoscript of css_styled_content in some way and  
that is causing your error.
