IIRC there is no way to interact with the backend anyway from outside of 
TYPO3 (e.g., no way to launch the setup admin to automatically agree to 
apply DB changes). Would the introduction of SOAP as part of the login 
process open this for further development? I'm not sure.

Unless you and other might find it useful in a "near" future to interact 
with TYPO3 with something else than a browser, I would prefer JSON over 
SOAP.
