I agree date2cal does its job already very well.

Unfortunately it currently has some nasty side-effects with IRRE which
should be fixed before adding it as a sysext.

Nevertheless I think there shouldn't be a TYPO3 installation without a
datepicker so a core implementation using e.g. extJS would be fine, too.
