I'll try to read the whole thread later, so bear with me if I write 
nonsense.

I fully agree.

Just FYI now:

Some of the errors have been caused by enhancements done to the install 
tool (a bunch of revisions ago when charset support was added to it). If 
that is fixed the parser chokes on new SQL that has been introduced (and 
was never used before), but that seems to be an easy fix.

I have updated the adodb extension to 5.0.7 locally, applied some 
patches and made it compatible with PHP 5.3 (deprecated functions). I 
plan to commit/upload that in a few days.

DBAL will get it's share of fixes to make sure it can be installed again 
and works with the core, that will be done after next week.

Further fixes should be done by those actually working on various 
databases (yes, those folks seem to exist, albeit more or less invisible).
