 It's a lossless recoding of the DCT-coefficients into different 
empirical developed progressive profiles (I think two fail always, but 
the script catches it; I always wanted to validate it). I applied the 
script to my entire 200GB image collection, saving about 15GB. I didn't 
encounter a software that would open it, but they mostly use Tom's (IJG) 
library anyway.
 I still use the script if I find a big quantity of images. I can't 
imagine how "ignorant" all these default settings for JPEG-creation must 
be ... LO
