[TYPO3-dev] pi_getFFvalue don't return an array (?)

All I got is the total of items...If I select 4 items the output of

$this-> pi_getFFvalue($this->cObj->data['pi_flexform'],'catID');
is 4

if I select 3, the output is 3

The total is almost useless in my case I'd like to get the values from 
the comma-separated list.
