[TYPO3-dev] Please test UI patches also in IE6

Hi Jigal,
Having IE6 working until 2014 may fit Microsoft's agenda, it doesn't necessarily have to fit TYPO3's. By the time it's 2014 it will be a *VERY* unwise decision for any enterprise to use IE6 for anything except maybe some oddball intranet application. The browser will be so far behind the times by then, it won't even be funny anymore. The web simply wouldn't work on it anymore, and rightfully so. It would be much like supporting 4.x browsers today. Of course it can be done technically, but the choice would hold TYPO3 back immensely or burden it with huge duplication of effort. It wouldn't be in any way unreasonable to drop IE6 in the next major 4.x release right after MS updates IE to 8.x (higher than .0) or even 9. Supporting IE6 any longer than that would simply be detrimental to the way TYPO3 is experienced by its users. An enterprise app for web publishing can use all the help it can get to be as comfortable and intuitive to the user as possible. Supporting IE6 will hold such developments back immensely.

Just my 2 cts.

Bas

Please read my answer earlier in this thread.
1) I could only find another date when MS will stop supporting IE6: April
8th, 2014 (and even then, more than a year after Zend stopped supporting
PHP4 there are still many web servers running PHP4 and TYPO3 is still
supporting a PHP4 version...)
2) With all due respect, I think it's too much a strategic decision (does
TYPO3 want enterprises using the CMS?) for developers to take.

Regards,
