Trial and error is a nice but pretty unproductive. The client expects to
have a list of things that will "break". I don't think we should hide
that from the users before upgrading.

If we now say in 4.5 method XY won't accept undefined vars anymore will
give every site admin the clear idea that he will have more or less one
year from now on to contract some developers to check his site for those
kind of issues, so that he can nicely upgrade to 4.5 when time comes.
That is enough backwards compatibility as we have defined several times
now (in 2 major versions, we can delete deprecated stuff). In the past
we haven't been that strict, which is why probably an upgrde from 3.7 to
4.3 still runs "smoothly", but I think we could. See my proposal for how
this should be handled on the other thread. :)
