I have no idea what 'they' are planning for TYPO3 5 but I truly hope
they will get rid of the current method.

The API to the database needs to get enriched so it's easer to make
a plug-gable DB interface (NO DBAL LIKE WE HAVE NOW PLEASE!!!!!)
so adding a support for a other database is as easy as creating a  
class-set for it.

I would personally like to see a XML sort of syntax rather then the  
XML files
to tell the CMS what fields to expect for each extension.

Also a build farm to import extensions and to test them on various  
databases would be a big +. (One can only dream....)
