No, but it is possible to fetch, for example, the whole rootline in one 
query using nested sets model. But this requires significant change to 
uid/pid model. Good start would be an experimental extension that 
maintains nested sets through the tcemain hooks. Than such extension 
could XCLASS several classes to verify that nested sets model works for 
typo3. If such experimental extension succeeds, it would be really a 
good start fro using nested sets in typo3.
