I can only speak from my point of view, but I don't think that the
content element 'table' is deprecated/outdated. It needs improvements,
yes, but it's the only way to generate tables with a predefined and
controlled layout by the admin or to build a table based on CSV values.
It's also easy to get tables with alternating row or column backgrounds.
You might be able to achieve the later with htmlarea, but a lot more
complicated for the editor, and editors have to many possibilities to
fool around with tables in the RTE. That's why I always deactivate
tables in RTE.
