Well, it is almost everywhere in the core like this... Imagine looking 
through t3lib_div or alt_doc.

Hard to comment on "financial benefit". Possibly it looks so from 
outside but it is not always like that from inside ;) I doubt people go 
to core because they want more money. It is not really connected.
