I never had any problems with typo3+imagemagic but I heard that some 
people have. Also I heard that many people use graphicsmagic, which is a 
better replacement for imagemagic with stable api. So, it can be a solution.

There is a class in typo3, called t3lib/class.t3lib_stdgraphic.php, it 
handles image operations. You may want to look at it if you think about 
new framework.
