Hello,
my question was basically 'how do I debug a problem in the backend'.  So 
I went for the typo3.dev newsgroup.

The Database compare idea is good but not the source of the problem in 
this case.  Nothing related to tt_news has to change.

I have been working with debugster() to write & debug extensions. I have 
no idea how or were to use it in this case.  I was hoping for some other 
way to get this type of information.
