This may be true for most pratical situations but in THEORY these fields
have to be large as the may contain wast amounts of ids. Blobs are
mostly used as naiv implementations of n-m- relations :-(

O.K. according to your post sorting isn't a matter. How about searching
/ comparison using the like operator?
