[TYPO3-dev] references within typo3 , using them and programming with them, also using DAM

Hey All,


I need to find out of a DAM record is in use or not and I would like to 
use references for that.
Where can I found pointers how to work with references?

I need to know how to add and check them since all adding/delete/editing 
of content on my site is done from
the front-end by web-users, but also from BE users.
The BE team is small, just 4 people and I can't allow and FE user to 
have BE access.

Any pointers would be great!
