[TYPO3-dev] looking for a sceduling engine

i found the extension "gabriel" in the ter and i like the idea but i
never seen that extension in use and it is still alpha.

i personally think that sceduling events is needed several times in the
whole system.

examples:
- publishing workspaces
- execute workflows
- create backups
- update statistic informations
- refresh caches
- create search index

what i would like to know is weather there is an "official" way to
scedule such events or weather gabriel is the only approach for
something like that.
