You have different options here.
1. For T3 version lower than 4.x use the "KB all colors" extension which
enables GIFBUILDER to render images with 24bit colors instead of 256 if you
have gdlib2 available. (Will be implemented in T3 versions 4.x+)
2. Change the gdlib settings in your install tool to png instead of gif
3. Never use JPG or GIF as source files for the GIFBUILDER - they always
contain artefacts that will be multiplied by the rendering process - use
uncompressed TIF or maybe even AI files instead.
4. Render the images twice the size of the original output size and then use
the SCALE function in GIFBUILDER as the last object in the list to scale
them down to the desired size. (Will render fonts with aliasing even without
niceText enabled as a side effect)

Have a look at this site: www.nenni-art.de
We create the menus and logos using GIFBUILDER with the original background
image as the first layer to simulate transparencies.
As you may notice there are next to none artefacts in the output files.
