I think the whole discussion about Smarty or a templating API was not 
targeting the replacement of TS - just providing a better templating API 
for extension developers that's also used in the future rendering 
technique (e.g. Templavoila), and most of the people arguing here it 
would be best to give everyone the choice to use exactly what they want to.

Even with smarty integrated in TYPO3, there would still be a need for 
TS, for example think about automatic menu generation or GIFBUILDER.
