ANY user who is smart enough to figure out how stdWrap functions work
can learn Smarty in 5 minutes and then will NEVER look back. In fact,
you can implement all stdWrap functions as your custom functions in
Smarty for people who got used to the old stuff.

And why do you think these two goals are mutually exclusive? I would
argue that TYPO3 is almost at the point where to get a better working
version of it you need to do a lot of things quite differently from
the way they are currently done.
