1. I'd not change most of the API, only the code under the hood. The 
basic core of what makes TYPO3 so good shall stay, like TS, flexbible 
templating, page tree, user permissions, all of that. Why should we 
change that?

2. Updating to an incompatible version is not the problem. We have 
pretty powerful features for that already. I guess if there is a 
one-time-migration script for a new version, everybody will be happy to 
use that.
