100 % backward compatibility isn't possible. TYPO3 is also relying on PHP 
and MySQL. They changes to, and aren't 100 % backwards compatible themselves. 
If TYPO3 has to change it's core to work flawless with PHP 5, it may give 
changes who make it necessary also to change extensions, or makes older extensions 
don't work as they should with the new version (and vice versa).

Else, i did the same as Ries, but on a smaller site (only 400 pages) and 
it was done really fast. It's a site who first was made with version 3.6, 
and upgraded the whole path. Without problems.

And sometimes you also have to make choices, because near 100 % backwards 
compatibility may "bloat" the code, and make it near impossible to maintain 
in the future.

And an upgrade of Vignette isn't any easy jobb (it may take days).
