There is always the option of installing an older version of an 
extension, or if youy want to use the newest or latest versions of 
extensions than it sometimes is necessary to upgrade to the latest TYPO3 
version. Basically, I only see an issue about not wanting to upgrade but 
still wanting to use the newest toys (say extensions). This says more 
about your email friend attitude (or his customers paying him not 
enough) than TYPO3.
