[Typo3-dev] [Typo3-tt-news] category tree for kickstarter?

Hello all,

I am new to typo3.projects.tt-news. Maybe the topic has already been 
discussed.

This is a cross posting to typo3.dev and typo3.projects.tt-news for good 
reasons I hope. Discussions should only go to typo3.dev please.

The new versions of tt_news come with a very comfortable and intuitive 
input for a category tree. Peeping into the source one can observe that 
the input is a user function

tx_ttnews_treeview->displayCategoryTree.

It is class from Rupert Germann, that is a variation of a class from 
René Fritz wich extends t3lib_treeview.

I would like to use an analogous category selector element in an 
extension of mine. Unfortunally it is a user function and not part of 
the main formset.

I guess categories organized in trees are of more general interest at 
the same time. See also the article "Semantic web" of Eike Diestlkamp 
and Benjamin Birkenhake in the first T3N magaizin.

So I have a bunch of questions now:

* How big do you estimate the effort to adapt the class for an own 
extension?

* Do you share my opinion that a catagory tree selector should be 
general available to use in BE-Forms? In example as an extension.

* Does such an extension already exist?

* Else is it planned?

* Should we take further steps to reach this target?
