Look again, there are branches for 3.7 and 3.8. HEAD is the current 
development version, which will become 4.0 eventually (I don't know the 
time when th 4.0 branch will be created)

Anyway, a fully tested PHP5 support is targetted for 4.0. But 4.0 is 
future, so using the CVS code does not guarantee you anything regardig PHP5.

I recommend using 3.8 and fixing the eventual error. I expect that there 
are fery few in the Core itself. With extensions YMMV.
