I did not like Bitrix'es version of BE at all. Icons are nice, this is
the only thing that I liked.

Try Site Explorer for example. You click on it, it open the only item:
browse. This is an example of bad GUI: choice from the only item.
Reminds me a message box:

Btw, if you want just a "better looking BE" install Crystal theme. Some
of my customers did not like BE but it became ok after I simply changed
schema. Everyone likes Aqua and Luna styles now...
