How much code is needed for an "AJAX-library"?

Reeinventing te wheel is to be avoided, but I don't think that it's too 
much overhead to build a JS-lib that integrates well into TYPO3.

PS: Is AJAX more than good ol' dHTML with a bit of XMLHttpRequest?
