It's a legacy solution from a time when we didn't have tools to manage easily 
the tables in the database. However it has prevailed because in many cases it 
is actually a quite handy and pragmatic way of getting things done, beautiful 
or not. Also figure; We introduced MM-tables for exactly the reason that we 
could use both methods (but this was post-be/fe-users which is why THEY still 
carry the old way with them).
