Mathias Schreiber has provided a patch to the version-swapping. That 
should also provide compatibility with mysql 3.x and 4.x < 4.14(?)?

Afair negative uids on autoincrement was only a problem in early 4.x 
versions?

I think his idea of swapping with a "transaction" does make much sense:

Worked nicely here. Would be cool if the core-gurus would have a look 
again into this issue.
