Well - this indicates you did something wrong.
Have a look at the sourcecode. - Is there _any_ wrap around the third item?
You wouldn't notice a missing <span> by just looking at the output.
Did you activate the different states (CUR = 1, ACT = 1)?

As you are very busy posting your PHP patches, maybe you could post your
menu setup instead?
