Another problem with typolinkCheckRootline is that it does not take linkVars 
into account. I'm not sure if it should do this for all vars, but I need 
itdefinitely for L.

I see some options for changung the behaviour:

* add a option that enables the preservation of just L
* add a option that preserves all linkVars
* add a option that preserves only a subset of linkVars

The first and second options are easily done and fast, the last is a bit 
slower but more flexible.

Opinions?
